Thomas A Brady, MD 1915-2011

Dr. Thomas A Brady passed away on Thursday, April 7th, 2011.

He was a true pioneer for sports medicine in Indiana, played basketball and baseball in college and professional baseball in the Wisconson State Baseball League.

His love of sports lead him as a physician, to cover athletic events beginning in the 1950's. He was the unofficial team doctor for most Indianapolis area high schools and colleges.

In the 60's, Dr. Brady established a daily walk-in clinic which began in a small room in the basement of Methodist Hospital to allow athletes immediate treatment. In 1968, he submitted a plan to the Indiana State Medical Association for a committee on sports medicine. He served as that committee’s first chairman and served on the committee until his retirement.

In 1982, Dr. Shelbourne joined Dr. Brady and they continued to develop sports medicine.

Dr. Brady developed many techniques for getting athletes back to their sport quickly and was instrumental in developing the research that athletes (and non-athletes) benefit from today.

Because of Dr. Brady's contribution to community service to athletes, churches and schools, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine established the Thomas A. Brady Award for Community Service in 1999.
